Qu'est-ce qui rend la tablette Motorola Xoom, sous Android Honeycomb, plus chčre que la tablette iPad aux caractéristiques comparables ? Le produit de Motorola a été désossé et livre quelques pistes. La tablette Motorola Xoom est commercialisée depuis la semaine derničre aux Etats-Unis mais au prix de 799 dollars nue, ou 599 dollars avec un abonnement data chez l'opérateur Verizon US. C'est (un peu ) plus cher que la tablette iPad d' Apple WiFi / 3G avec 32 Go de stockage. Comme ŕ chaque lancement de produits électroniques, les analystes ont désossé les tablettes pour en évaluer le coűt des composants ( la fameuses BOM ou Bill of Materials ) et déterminer qui sont les fournisseurs. UBM TechInsights évalue ŕ 278 dollars le coűt de fabrication brut d'une tablette Motorola Xoom ŕ partir de ses composants, contre 245 dollars pour la tablette iPad la plus proche au niveau des caractéristiques. La différence se joue au niveau des APN ( une webcam en façade et un APN 5 megapixels au dos ) qui ajoutent 14 dollars ŕ la BOM mais aussi sur l'affichage qui, en offrant une plus grande résolution, coűte aussi plus cher, d'environ 5 dollars. Ce dernier argument n'est pas repris par IHS iSuppli, qui a aussi son estimation ( pas encore dévoilée ) et qui fait remarquer que la tablette iPad dispose d'une technologie d'affichage IPS, plus onéreuse. Mais il faut compter aussi des capteurs ( de pression, notamment ) le processeur dual core Tegra 2 de Nvidia et 1 Go de RAM lŕ oů l'iPad utilise un processeur ARM Cortex-A8 et 256 Mo de RAM Un positionnement prix qui intrigue Mais la plupart des analystes se posent la męme question : pourquoi Motorola n'a-t-il pas cherché ŕ produire une tablette avec une BOM plus basse, quitte ŕ se passer de certains composants, pour pouvoir concurrencer le premier prix d' Apple et se positionner sur ce critčre essentiel ? Sanjay Jha a indiqué qu'une tablette 7" verrait probablement le jour cette année chez Motorola, tandis que le prix de la Motorola Xoom était lié ŕ la présence d'un modem 4G LTE pour Verizon ( qui n'est pas présent sur les modčles vendus et devra ętre installé ultérieurement ). La tablette Xoom vise aussi une cible plus professionnelle tandis que la future tablette 7" sera plutôt orientée divertissement. Le patron de Motorola Mobility a également indiqué que les premiers chiffres de ventes de la Motorola Xoom n'étaient pas mauvais, sans en dire davantage. En Europe, une version WiFi de la tablette Xoom est attendue sous peu.

HTC Phenom is a concept device created by Marc Aynote from Tokyo, Japan. All I can do with this handset is suppose what it’s all about, since I have no specifications and design details for it. Thus, I can assume it’s a handset for youngsters and teens, since it’s pretty tiny, slim and appealing. It comes with the classic HTC back case, some very interesting buttons at the bottom, that seem to light up in a nice way and an original concept design. If I were to guess, I’d say that the display on this phone is a 3.2 inch one, showing the classic HTC Sense interface, in a version older than 3.0, if I’m not mistaking. This means that the specs on this device aren’t that evolved, so we might get a 800 MHz CPU here, 700 MB of RAM and maybe 2 GB of internal memory. This model supports 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi and should come with a 3 or 5 megapixel camera. Priced at $150 let’s say, this would become a total hit on the worldwide market, but we have to remind you that right now it’s a mere design, but one can dream, right? [via coroflot]

Abhi Aravind has quite a bunch of concepts available on our website, so one more can’t hurt, right? The latest newcomer is the HTC Nova, a superb Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich handset with the ability to play back 1920 x 1080 video, supposedly. The HTC concept pone uses a 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen, a 12 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 1080p video recording, plus a 1GHz dual core processor and 1GB of RAM. 48GB of SSD memory, plus up to 80GB of expandable storage are also available. Filling in the blanks are 4G connectivity, USB 3.0 and WiFi, plus a customizable homescreen. If Android 4.0 is anything like this, then I’m buying the devices it’ll be available on! As far as the HTC Nova goes, the speaker at the top is a nice touch, while the capacitive buttons at the bottom remind me of the HTC Touch older models, which is always a good thing, since everyone seemed to love those early smartphones.

We’ve seen quite a bunch of HTC HD3 concepts before, but this time we have a newcomer created by Abhi Aravind. This is a Windows Phone 7 model, with a 4.5 inch S-LCD screen sporting a 480 x 800 pixel resolution and a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. There’s also an 8 megapixel camera on board, with autofocus, xenon flash and support for 1080p video recording. 1GB of onboard RAM, a Nvidia 512MB GPU and 1080p video playback sound excellent on the specs list of this smartphone. Add to that 4G connectivity support, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS and 32GB of storage and you’ve got a very solid handset. Mango OS would also look great on the HTC HD3 and considering the size of the tiles on the screen, this is a modified version of WP7. The design looks a bit like the one of the HTC HD7 and I really am not sure about implementing the call and end call capacitive buttons at the bottom, since you might press other buttons by mistake.

HTC Elegant Windows Phone

Created by Kevin Zhou, the HTC Elegant Windows Phone concept has a lower side that greatly reminds of devices such as the Nokia N8. Not that it’s a bad thing, since handsets like the N8 and E7 were very much appreciated for their design and less for their software. These images look as if they were taken with a leaked smartphone, but that’s not the case here… Instead we get 3D renders of a nifty HTC concept phones that keeps a simple design of the back case, with the logo on, dual speakers, a 5-8 megapixel camera with LED flash and a front display that could be anywhere between 3. 8 inch and 4.3 inch in diagonal. The typical Windows Phone buttons under the screen are capacitive ones and this certainly looks like solid Windows Phone Mango material. Not so sure about, the color, as some people would love to see this phone in black or maybe a shade of blue. Also, one must notice the grille at the top, next to the front camera, reminding me of the HTC Desire S and Incredible S. Would you buy such a device if it were real?

Abhi Aravind keeps it old school, creating the HTC Aurora tablet concept, a device that relies on a customized flavor of Honeycomb. All copyright belongs to the designer and don’t forget to check out his deviantArt profile, since he has tons of other cool concepts out there. As far as the HTC Aurora tablet is concerned, we’re dealing with an Android 3.0 Honeycomb slate here, one that runs a custom HTC interface and comes with a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and 720p video capture. There’s also a 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen on board, with multitouch support, plus WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. 4G is also among the supported connectivity types and the internal memory is 64GB (SSD). Strangely enough, the CPU isn’t a Qualcomm or a Nvidia one, since the designer chose a 2GHz AMD Phenom X7, together with 2GB DDR3 RAM. Last, you should know that this concept does 1920 x 1080 full HD video playback. Would you buy this tablet if it were real?

You might be familiar with the name tob!s or Tobi, if you’ve followed our Sony Ericsson concept phones section before. Now, Tobi is back with an iPhone 5 concept that you can see below, pictured in the white version. Quick reminder of the latest rumors: the launch date of the new iPhone is October 7th. Excited? Tobi proposes a more rectangular device, most likely adopting that rumored edge to edge screen and possibly sporting a bigger diagonal. This design seems very iPad-inspired, if you look at the back case especially. Another inspiration from the Apple tablet is drawn with the inclusion of the Smart Cover accessory that attaches to the device. The problem here is: do we really need this accessory? Notice the elongated Home button area that fits in perfectly with the rumors we’ve heard, about that are being some sort of touchpad enabling gesture control that will help you browse in menus. So, what do you think of the designer’s effort?

Who said style can’t be achieved with a WP7 device? This is proved by the HTC Dessert concept phone created by AleksandrZ, a stylish smartphone with a candybar design and 1.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

HTC Dessert comes with 1GB of RAM, 32GB of ROM and a Super AMOLED 4 inch display with incredible resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels. There’s also an 8 megapixel camera with support for HD video capture and the specs list of the concept includes a GPS, 4G connectivity and a 1900 mAh battery. Such a stylish phone needs precious materials for its case, maybe something like marble or croc leather?

The only thing I’m worried about is the back side of the handset, that seems a bit too glossy for its own good…

After yesterday’s flexible Samsung Galaxy phone, today we bring you a flexible HTC created by Kareem Pownall from Hartford. His idea is to implement two screens on a smartphone, including a flexible OLED touchscreen.

This flexible display scrolls out of the phone, providing a 6 inch widescreen display in total. When rolled in, the device is pretty tiny and reminds me of an older Nokia model that was also very narrow and a bit bulky. I love the upper and lower side of the device, that’s pretty modern and the profile picture of this unit looks a bit like a sci-fi starship.

My worry is the usual one: how fragile this HTC cocnept phone really is… Would you like a flexible HTC smartphone?
